Local food and stories behind it on seafront

LOCAL food and drink producers were showcased yesterday as Town played host to its first Eat, Drink & Be Local Seafront Sunday.

The seafront was taken over by a range of stalls offering a diverse range of products, and although locally produced items were to the fore, there was also plenty of chance to try something from further afield.

Among the international tastes on offer was sake and food from Japan, offered by The Hook, and there was a chance to learn something about the links between Japan and Guernsey in talks organised by Pat Johnson, of Floral Guernsey.

Wandering among the crowds was Naoko Mauger and Asami Tasaka, an importer of sake who was making a return visit to the island and joining Mrs Mauger in giving away origami cranes to passers-by.

Elsewhere people could sample locally caught oysters courtesy of Guernsey Oysters, and taking the chance to try something new were some of the many passengers from the visiting cruise ship Britannia.

David Maunder, wife Karen, daughter Elaine and her fiance, James Gillingham, had already had a few samples of other local fare, including Rocquette Cider: ‘I’d never heard of it,’ said Mrs Maunder. ‘It was very good.’

The oysters had something of a mixed reception: ‘That’s the best oyster I’ve ever had in Guernsey,’ joked Mr Maunder.

His daughter thought they needed something extra: ‘I think they’re better with the chilli sauce,’ she said.

Eat Drink & Be Local committee chairman Charlotte Dickson said the aim was to promote local food and drink producers, but also to give attendees the chance to hear their background stories, with talks including Rocquette Cider, Guernsey Oysters, Wheadon’s Gin and Wallow Farm.

This was the first Eat, Drink and Be Local Sunday and there are three more, culminating in a weekend-long festival.
