Man rescued from roof of house one of seven arrested
FIREFIGHTERS assisted police in getting a man off the roof of a property in Braye Road, Vale, early on Saturday.
On being brought down, a witness said the man was handcuffed, and police later said that he was one of seven people arrested over the weekend in connection with the same investigation.
‘Police were called at 4.30am to an incident in Braye Road,’ said a police spokesman on Saturday. ‘Five arrests have been made and the investigation is on-going.’
Two more people were arrested later in relation to the investigation.
A witness, who asked not to be identified, watched the early morning drama unfold.
‘I saw police cars and police getting out putting on black balaclavas and putting ear pieces in,’ they said.
‘Then I heard them shouting “Police – come to the door or we’ll break it down”.
‘I saw there was a chap on the roof and the fire brigade came along and put a ladder up.’
The witness said that as they watched a person, who they assumed to be a police officer wearing a blue glove, reached through a roof window and took hold of the man on the roof while the firefighters raised the ladder.
‘He looked pretty precarious,’ said the witness. ‘A fire officer went up to get him down and he was arrested at the bottom.
‘It was quite exciting,’ they said. ‘At first I thought it had been some sort of explosion.’
The road between the Crossways Centre and Oatlands traffic lights was closed from about 6.30am until nearly 9.45am with the police using social media to inform islanders.
. Police have not yet said if any of those arrested have been charged.
