Volunteers play a part in ‘first aid’ to path

PATCHING up a crumbling pathway between La Valette and the bottom of Le Val des Terres was the most recent job undertaken by volunteers from the Art of Living group.

Several spent a morning digging up old hoggin and preparing the way for concrete to be laid to make the surface more even.

However, Art of Living’s Andrew Pouteaux said this was not a full repair, more ‘first aid’ to make the pathway usable for the next few years.

He had brought the state of the path, which runs between the foot of the Terres and the raised walkway opposite Octopus, to the attention of the States Land Management Services a couple of years ago.

It did not have the budget for a full repair at the time, but more recently it offered to provide the volunteers with some support: ‘Land Management have really been amazing,’ said Mr Pouteaux.

Water, sand and cement have been provided and while the volunteers did the job of digging out badly crumbled sections of the surface, the day after their work, a team from Community Service were due to go along and cement up the gaps.

He said the group had also received a lot of support from the Lions Club for its work.

‘We reckon this will probably be good for another five years,’ said Mr Pouteaux. He hoped that by that time, funds would be available for the States to do a complete resurfacing of the path and repair the walls.
