‘There are only 13 out of 1,200 roads closed’

TRAFFIC and Highway Services has defended how many roads are currently closed in Guernsey, after being criticised on social media.

A member of the public posted on Facebook, asking had there ever been as many roads closed at once.

The official Traffic and Highways Service account was quick to respond.

‘We have 260 miles of road,’ they said.

‘At present there are only 13 roads closed out of around 1,200. Many of the closures are on small roads. These roads are closed either to repair utility services to ensure homes have those services, to lay new services, or to repair roads, all of which is valuable work.’

The member of the public also said there appeared to be not many people working on the closures, highlighting Rue du Pont Vaillant as one example, which has been closed since 28 May.

‘We must have ghosts down there doing all the hard work then,’ Traffic and Highways posted.

‘At least it will save us all money. Every time our staff have been down there we’ve been able to find the team hard at work. You’ll be pleased to know this valuable resurfacing project looks to be ahead of schedule.’

According to the official Traffic and Highways site, Rue du Pont Vaillant should reopen on 21 June.
