Donna Power was taking her two daughters Maddy and Gracie Welch, aged nine and five respectively, home from a tiring sports day when the incident occurred.

‘I was driving along the Weighbridge towards Salerie and he was cycling in front quite slow, he was meandering and not letting me pass.

‘I did beep at him but I don’t think he heard me the first time because he had earphones in.’

Ms Power said she beeped a second time and the cyclist did look round.

‘I told him to use the cycle path if he wanted to cycle slowly, then he slowed down and came right alongside my daughter’s window and hawked right back and spat.’

Ms Power said because the car was moving he missed the open front window where five-year-old Gracie was sat and the spit landed on the window of the back seat where her eldest daughter was.

‘It was lucky the window was only a quarter of the way down or it would have got her straight in the face.’

Ms Power said he would have known his attack would not have hit her because he had pulled up to the passenger side of the car.

The cyclist then turned into Salerie Corner and, thinking he might speak to her and also because she was scared he had got her daughter’s face, Ms Power also pulled in.

‘As soon as I got out the car and he saw he just bolted.

‘I went out to the pavement, stamped my foot and just screamed for him to come back.’

Ms Power called 999 because she could still see him, however, the police were not sent directly to the scene and instead met her at her house.

She said although the policeman who came by was friendly and helpful, she was disappointed nobody was sent to catch the culprit at the time.

Ms Power said after posting about the incident on Facebook, islanders had been kind, asking if the girls were all right and criticising the behaviour of the cyclist.

‘Gracie is still petrified she’s going to see him again,’ she said.

n The incident occurred at around 3.20pm on Tuesday 9 July and police are investigating the situation. Anyone with information can contact PC 147 Le Page on 725111 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
