Guernsey Mind and Male Uprising Guernsey will attempt to break the Guinness World Record for the longest human chain of people patting each other on the back.

The man-powered flight activity, which sees participants jump from a platform into the marina at high tide, will be a further show of solidarity between the two charities.

Guernsey Mind executive director Emily Litten said it would be an amazing event.

‘Taking part in the Guinness World Record will be something that people will take away with them,’ she said.

‘It’s a great way of saying we’ve got each others’ back. We’re aiming to highlight that no one is alone and to encourage people to talk about their mental health.

‘Then taking part in the jump later on will be such good fun.’

The pat on the back also symbolises the Mug Barmy Army, Be A Real Mate Yeh, and Nag, Need Attention Gentlemen, movements, which encourage supporting men to go to a doctor and get checked.

These initiatives are also backed by Guernsey Mind as the charities work together to ensure men feel confident speaking out about their health concerns.

The current world record stands at 824 people but organisers are hoping to beat this by encouraging 1,000 islanders to take part, with all ages and abilities welcome to participate.

At the start, participants will be given a numbered wristband along with a commemorative ‘Knot on our Watch’ rope bracelet in the charity’s colours.

Mug chairman Trevor Kelham said both the record attempt and the jump into the marina were to represent the support charities would always provide to each other.

‘Me and Emily from Mind are going dressed as M&Ms because it is the first letter of each charity,’ he said. ‘It’s a fantastic collaboration between the two charities that shows we’re there for one another.

‘Jumping in, it’ll probably be more about who makes the biggest bomb when you hit the water.’

People need to collect wristbands for the world record attempt from stewards before 5.30pm.

The line will start in the closed-off road from outside Marks & Spencer and will stretch to the Weighbridge and back.
