‘We’ve had parking issues at the Bridge, as well as staffing issues, so footfall is just not as good as our shop at Vazon,’ owner Caroline La Touche said.

The shop in Rue des Goddards, Castel, which has its own car park, will remain open.

‘This has been a long time coming,’ Mrs La Touche said about the Bridge shop closure.

‘Our lease is up in October and for six months we’ve been trying to let it out, but no one has wanted to take on the property so far.’

She believed a lack of parking on the Bridge would mean other businesses would soon follow Smilers and close for good.

‘Until the States sort out parking and Leale’s Yard is developed, I don’t think we will be the only business leaving the Bridge.’

Smilers’ closing down sale began at the start of the year.

Smilers has been trading for 37 years and has had the shop at the Bridge for the last three.

Mrs La Touche had said she had given it a ‘good go’ at the Bridge but the lack of customers was not worth the extra hassle of the additional shop.
