Windy weather caused some problems for the festivities, but the wind dropped just in time to allow the final event of the week to take place.

Team leader Bryony Harris said they were relieved it had been OK.

‘It was really good,’ she said.

‘We were worried for quite a long time [about the torchlight procession], but we got the OK in the afternoon.

‘The wind dropped in the last couple of hours before.’

Friday saw some of the popular events cancelled due to the weather, including the festival of colour, the school disco and the burlesque night.

‘We only had one day that was really disrupted,’ Mrs Harris said.

‘But it’s been really good.

‘We have had so many people over.

‘People said the cavalcade and the torchlight procession were the busiest they had seen in years.’

Saturday’s sandcastle competition was also shortened to ensure people did not get cold from spending too long outside. But the quality of the entries was high.

‘It was really busy and popular,’ Mrs Harris said.

‘Most people went with the theme, so we had lots of animals and circus themes.

‘But one girl made the ruins of Pompeii. We were really impressed.’

The junior talent competition went ahead, but was moved to the Island Hall.

‘It was packed and the children did an amazing job,’ Mrs Harris said.

This is the last year for Bryony Harris and her organising team.

She had been involved with running Alderney Week for the last five years.

‘It’s definitely been a positive experience,’ she said.

‘It’s been amazing to get involved with the island and meet people.’

A new team is being put together for next year’s event and there will be a handover soon.
