CHRISTMAS is coming, but the GSPCA is not searching for a turkey, but rather the owners of one and its chicks.

A stray turkey mother and her nine turkey chicks were rescued by the GSPCA from near Grow Ltd in Capelles last Tuesday and staff are now looking for the owner of the birds, which are currently in their care.

GSPCA manager Steve Byrne said he wanted to appeal to the person to whom the turkey mother and her chicks belonged.

‘We rescued them last week and they are safe and well,’ he said.

‘It looks like the babies were just hatched that day and they’re growing really quickly, as turkeys do. We now want to find the person who is responsible for them, otherwise we’re going to have an awful lot of big turkey birds on our hands.

‘The turkey mother is very protective of her chicks and is being a proper mum.’

Under Animal Welfare (Guernsey) Ordinance, 2012, the birds will be liable to be rehomed within 21 days of the date found, unless the owner claims them.

‘It’d be great to get them back to who they belong to,’ Mr Byrne said. ‘But poultry are not always claimed, unfortunately.

‘Dogs are always claimed when they are lost, but not poultry.

‘We get about a handful of stray turkeys each year, but usually they’re reunited quite quickly, although we have rehomed a few. Like Tinsel and Cracker, who were found just before Christmas and came to local fame.

‘We have possible homes for these birds if it does come to it but it’s not that easy because there are 10 of them.’

From cockerels to dogs and chickens to rabbits, the GSPCA has urged anyone who is looking for a pet to contact them, they have a number of different animals that always need homes.

n Anyone with information about the turkeys should contact the GSPCA on 257261 or email admin@gspca.org.gg.
