Over 20,000 votes for Pride of Guernsey 2019
A RECORD number of votes
have been cast in this year’s Guernsey Press Pride of Guernsey awards.
Public voting drew to a close at 10am yesterday after a total of 20,250 votes were cast across the 146 nominees.
‘I’m overwhelmed with how many people have shown their support for the Pride of Guernsey awards this year,’ Guernsey Press managing director Mark Lewis said.
‘More votes were cast in the 24-day voting period this year than any year previously.’
A total of 19,612 votes were cast online and 638 paper voting forms were submitted.
‘It is so important to recognise the people who make us proud of Guernsey and this year, as ever, there has been an impressive collection of inspiring people,’ he said.
Once the votes have been counted, a shortlist will be made up of the three nominees with the most public votes in each of the 13 categories.
Shortlisted nominees will be invited to a ceremony at the Guernsey Press offices in October where the winners – decided by a panel of judges – will be announced.
Mr Lewis added: ‘The Pride of Guernsey awards are a chance to celebrate incredible people, from teachers and carers to outstanding youngsters and those who make a difference in their parish.
‘It’s certainly going to be difficult to whittle down the top three to just one.’
Islanders could vote for as many nominees as they liked, but could only cast one vote per nominee.
Untrue votes – meaning several votes cast in very quick succession by one online user for one nominee – were taken out of the count to make the shortlist a true representation of the top three most popular nominees.
