Guernsey Vets4Pets put a message out on social media warning dog owners who walk their dogs around L'Ancresse to be careful in that area.

Practice manager and qualified veterinary nurse Jennie Ninnim said a dog was brought into Vets4Pets today [30/10] after ingesting some raisins on the common.

The dog is now doing well but the owner said there were various piles of raisins found by the Martello tower, at the end of Pembroke beach, near the car park and on the pathway by the overflow car park.

'We do not know why the raisins were there, I'm hoping it was just someone who was feeding the birds and did not realise how harmful they are to dogs,' Ms Ninnim said.

'It doesn't take many raisins to cause very serious problems for dogs.

'If a dog ingests raisins they should be taken to a vet straight away, and if an owner suspects they have been ingested it's best to see a vet to be on the safe side.'

Symptoms include vomiting, diarrhoea, lethargy, anorexia, tremors and even muscle spasms.

Vomiting needs to be induced immediately if ingestion is suspected.
