With just over two weeks until the switch-on event, volunteers are still searching for a tree to go on the parish green.

St Peter’s Floral Group is in charge of sourcing the tree, with the church planning this year’s switch-on event.

But floral group volunteer Deputy Al Brouard said they have struggled to find the right tree this year.

‘We are looking for about a 10ft tall tree or the top 10ft of a Christmas tree, which is about three or four metres,’ he said.

Mr Brouard said if they did only take the top part of tree, they would make sure the rest of tree was used, for example as logs or fronds for goats.

The parish has been putting up a Christmas tree on Les Buttes outside the church since 1999. However they have sometimes struggled before to find someone to donate a tree. Mr Brouard said he had planted several a few years ago, with a plan to use them for the parish green. However they were still five or six years away from maturing to the right size.

Mr Brouard said it was important to have the tree for Christmas.

‘It’s a lovely, local focal point, with the stain-glass windows of the church behind it,’ he said.

Ideally the volunteers need to collect the tree on Saturday 30 November, so it can be in position for the switch-on event on Friday 6 December.

Further details about the event will be released soon.
