The incident happened at about 1am on Saturday at a house on St Peter Port’s Rougeval Estate.

Mr Chadwick and his wife, Lorna, were walking home through the Bouet after an evening out when they spotted the fire.

‘We could see a young couple and a baby up on the scaffolding,’ Mr Chadwick said.

‘Lorna boosted me over the wall and I helped to take the baby, so the couple could climb down. I could not see the fire, but there was a lot of smoke.’

Despite all the excitement, the baby was quiet though the rescue.

‘The baby was very sweet and snuggled into me,’ said Mr Chadwick.

Having helped the family, he went around the other side of the building and saw an older woman trying to leave the property and helped her to move safely away.

The Joint Emergency Services Control Centre confirmed that two fire appliances were sent to the property at about 1.35am and put the fire out. Ambulance staff also attended and assessed people at the scene. Two people were taken to hospital as a precaution.

The fire service left the scene at about 3.20am.
