Escaped cattle caught by motorists

A HERD of cattle which escaped from a field at L'Eree gave rugby player Rachel Merrien and other motorists a surprise last night.

Miss Merrien came across the wandering cows on her way to training and ended up joining forces with other drivers to try and contain the animals.

She said the first thing she did was phone the police and get a message to the farmer at Smithfield Farm via her mum to see if they were his.

'Luckily, some other cars stopped to help and we managed to get them towards Portelet,' she said.

'We had to chase after them to see where they had gone as we were not sure if they had gone to the fairy ring, but luckily we heard them run down from a path just up from the beach.'

In the end, someone placed a car sideways in the bus turning point at Portelet and, along with a human barrier, this stopped the cows going any further.

'I ran in to the Imperial to see if anyone had lost some cows or if any one had phoned to see if they had seen them but luckily I heard pretty quickly the farmers were on their way as the number 91 bus was coming along Rocquaine Bay.'

Of the 11 escapees, Miss Merrien and the other passers by had managed to keep seven in the layby when the farmers arrived to walk their animals back to the fields at L'Eree.

'I thought it would be quite funny to share my evening with my friends on Facebook,' she said.

'Little did I know that within 12 hours it would have over 1000 shares and 600 likes giving everyone a little chuckle on a dark December night.'
