Two charities, the Sailors’ Society and Stella Maris Chaplains, have been working closely with the owners of the ship since its arrival in Portland Port in November.

They provided food and other essentials for the crew and have been helping the owner arrange the crew’s repatriation, a spokesman from the Portland Harbour Authority said.

‘All the crew have now been paid their wages and most have been repatriated, with the balance arriving home on Christmas Day. Portland Port will continue to work with the owners as they make arrangements for the vessel to be moved to its intended destination.’

The MV Jireh had been travelling from Norway, where it operated in the fjords, to its new owners in Senegal, west Africa.

Before moving to Portland Harbour, the MV Jireh had spent a few days off the east coast of Jersey, sheltering from bad weather.

The ship was denied entry to St Helier Harbour because it did not have a shipping agent.

She then anchored off Guernsey for 11 days but was also denied entry to St Peter Port Harbour because it did not have any suitable berths, although it did arrange for the Red Cross and the Co-op to send aboard clothes and food.
