Solar lighting in shelters trialled to boost bus use
LIGHTING is being trialled in coastal bus shelters.

Traffic & Highway Services have organised the programme.
‘Lighting the bus shelters is another improvement introduced to further encourage people to use the scheduled bus services,’ a spokesman said.
‘The lights have been installed at Portelet, L’Eree, Grandes Rocques and Vazon, as these are areas with little or no ambient lighting. The intention is to install them in all other enclosed shelters, once the units have proved reliable and subject to feedback.’
Grandes Rocques was the first shelter to get lighting, back in 2018. However it was not until last year that less obtrusive lights were installed.
‘The lighting is solar powered and operates on a light sensor when it is dark,’ the spokesman said.
Sunrise is currently just after 8am and sunset is just before 4.30pm.
The earliest bus services run at about 5am and they continue until nearly 10pm. There are also the night bus services, which run until about 1am.
During the first half of 2019, nearly 900,000 passenger journeys were made using the buses.
