Between 2.30am and 4am this morning [27 January], someone forced their way into Northern Motor Works on Grandes Maison Road.

Police are asking for anyone with private CCTV along or near that road to check their footage.

'We are looking for a lone individual, about six foot tall,' they said.

'Anyone with a dashcam who was driving in the area around those times is also asked to have a look at their recordings.'

Anyone offered cigarrettes to buy over the coming days and weeks are asked to contact the Police as they could well be the stolen ones.

The owner of the garage Bernard Roussel said it was not the first time the establishment had been hit by thieves and a similar incident happened several years ago.

'We have CCTV and can see footage of the chap who broke in.

'We could see him hunting for stuff to take, he was there quite a while - an hour or so.'

Mr Roussel said it was a disappointing nuisance for he and his son who own the garage.

Temporary detective constable Francesca Babbe said this appeared to be an isolated incident, so there was no need for wider concern.

'However, we urge anyone with information about this crime to get in touch. The more information we have, the higher the likelihood of an arrest and conviction.'
