GNET was relaunched in 2018 and promotes local talent. On Saturday an open day was held at St James, with an array of local performers taking to the stage.

GNET chairman Sean Johnson said the open day aimed to show people what they can do.

‘The station is really to give people a platform for local artists and get their music out there,’ he said.

Among the artists performing at the six-hour live session at St James were DJ GEasy, Vice, Clara Banks and Co and Kiya Ashton.

A medical emergency resulted in duo The Beautiful Nightmares, consisting up of Callum Aitken and Stuart Leach, having to step in to perform at the last minute. But Mr Aitken said they were happy to help the radio station.

‘They are great and it’s really raising awareness. It is important to give people the opportunity to play music.’

The event was live streamed over the station’s Facebook page.

The station is always available and islanders can listen to it through the internet, apps or smart speakers. There is always something special on between 6 and 10 each night and when the radio is not live, the music is automated.

Mr Johnson said the station was going from strength to strength.

Last month there were 2,500 unique listeners. In the last quarter there were 6,000, so the station is on track to beat that at the start of this year.

‘It’s been a bit of a hard slog to get it off the ground, but people do now know about it and they then talk about it,’ he said.
