Marina tide marker will be cleaned up

A BUILD-UP of deposits covering the fixed tide gauge in the QEII Marina will be cleaned ‘in the near future’, a Guernsey Harbours spokesman said.

The gauge gives boat owners an indication of the tide height to help them know when it is safe to cross the marina sill.

But in recent weeks the amount of growth on the gauge has all but covered the measurements.

About 10 years ago a digital readout was taken out of service and Guernsey Harbours’ head of estates and technical services – ports, Martyn Stanfield, said that this will not be replaced.

‘All mariners entering and exiting the marina are reminded to use the traffic light system to indicate the gate position and the fixed tide gauges,’ he said.

‘The technical services team will also clean the fixed tide gauges as part of routine maintenance in the near future.’

Meanwhile, routine inspections of the marina gates are being carried out by Guernsey Harbours’ technical services team to make sure they are fully operational.

‘This inspection was carried out during low tide periods so as not to impede vessel access to the marina.

‘This is standard practice in our ongoing maintenance programme of our infrastructure.’
