The Red Lion pub team, known as the Red Lion Growlers, regularly sell a football-themed raffle to pub-goers on Friday evenings.

While some of the money raised goes back into the club for away-game taxi fares or other expenses, the team like to give back to the community and support local charities.

‘In the past we’ve donated televisions to the maternity and children’s wards at the PEH and supported cancer relief charities and the tsunami appeal,’ euchre team member Andy Eborall said.

‘But this time one of the members in our team had been talking to [boxing coach] Tom Duff and told us that the club was in dire need of some new boxing gloves.’

They ordered nine pairs of gloves off the internet and dropped the box of equipment round to the Amalgamated Boxing Club on a Sunday afternoon, where they were able to watch some of the boxers training and sparring with one another.

Coach Tom Duff said: ‘These gloves are great for sparring so will be used by around 30 of our carded boxers.

‘It’s very good of the team to think of us and it’s brilliant timing because our gloves are quite worn out now, so the boxers will be able to get a great couple of years out of these new ones.’

He said on behalf of the boxers, coaches and trainers that they could not thank the Red Lion Growlers enough and were very grateful for the kind donation.

The euchre players like to give a physical donation to the clubs and charities they support, instead of just handing over a cheque, because they like to see what their fundraising efforts go towards.

The hand-over also always makes a for a good photo which is put up in the pub.
