Jersey senator aims to swim around Guernsey

JERSEY senator Steve Pallett is using the disappointment of a troublesome Sark crossing as motivation for a rare round-Guernsey swim.

The Jersey Long Distance Swimming Club member is aiming to become only the third Caesarean to swim around the island later this year, following a cross-Channel attempt by his training partner Neil Faudemer.

Alison Wood (nee Horsfall, 1998) and Richard Flambard (1999) are the only two Jersey-based swimmers on record to have completed the 28-mile circumnavigation around Guernsey.

They were both inside ten hours.

‘I’ve been training with a few people, including Neil, and I’ve already started upping the training to keep me motivated,’ Senator Pallett said.

‘I wanted something to aim for and after the one I failed on last time – Sark to Jersey – I quite fancy Guernsey because it’s not done very often and it’s not particularly easy.

‘It’s colder, the currents are different from Jersey and it’s logistically harder too.

‘I think it’s only a handful, maximum, who have done it before, but I’m feeling pretty good.

'For me it’s about keeping the speed up.

'I can stay in the water a long time but I need to keep the speed up to keep the momentum going.

'You can waste a lot of time if you slow down.’

Senator Pallett swam around Jersey in 2015 [11hr 08min] and from Jersey to France in 2016 [9hr 37min], before his more recent failed bid to return home from Sark.
