Guernsey WI Show The Love Campaign off to a smashing start
CHINA and glass were being smashed up this morning in preparation for tomorrow's [15 Feb] Show the Love campaign with the Women's Institute.
Each Valentine's Day, the Guernsey WI holds a community-wide event to share the love and start conversations about climate change.
The WI was one of the founding members of the climate coalition and each year they encourage people in the community to take part in projects which feature green hearts.
Previously, knitted green hearts have been handed out, a group met on the beach dressed in green and stood in the shape of a heart and hand-made badges were given out.
This year, inspired by the Guernsey flag mosaic created by Iris & Dora, the Guernsey WI is inviting people to the pop-up shop in the inner market to help create a green heart-shaped mosaic.
Chairperson of the Guernsey WI community affairs committee Sharon Williams said this year the Women's Institute want to do something on the weekend following Valentine's Day to encourage as many people in the community to take part as possible.
'Iris & Dora are making the heart-shaped mould which green glass, china and seaglass will be glued to,' she said.
'It will sit on top of a steel pole donated by Guernsey Metals to make it look like a floating balloon.'
The structure will be mounted to a base covered in white china and donated to a local organisation.
'We'd love to see islanders come into the pop-up shop for five or ten minutes to have a go at completing the artwork so it's a real community project.'
The WI is a non-political organisation that lobbies women's issues and anything to do with the environment.
