The owners have given notice to Guernsey Waste requesting that the site be vacated due to the detrimental impact that the collection vehicles are having on the surface of the surrounding area, which is costly to repair and maintain.

Sarah Robinson, Guernsey Waste operations manager, said: ‘More than two-thirds of material we collect now comes through kerbside recycling, including 90% of all plastics, cartons, tins and cans.

‘We will therefore shortly be carrying out a full review of the bring bank system, and given that this site will have to close imminently, it makes sense to do that now, and focus the review on the remaining sites.

‘Unfortunately, over the years the St Martin’s site has also been subject to persistent misuse, including fly-tipping, littering and commercial abuse.

‘Clearing and maintaining the site plus collections comes at a cost.

‘We would like to take this opportunity to thank the site owners for letting us stay so long.’

She added: ‘The review will include examining how we regulate and monitor sites, and which should remain, taking account of various factors such as the facilities offered, popularity, location, and proximity to alternative sites.’
