Parking at Fermain could be regulated

PARKING spaces in Fermain Road, Rue de Putron and Becquet Road, St Peter Port, could be made 23-hour regulated parking in a bid to tackle the issue of vehicles being abandoned in the area.

Environment & Infrastructure is proposing the change in response to complaints of vehicles being left there for long periods or abandoned.

The proposal would replace the existing unregulated parking. About 60 spaces would be affected and it would not result in any loss of spaces.

Traffic and Highway Services does not have the resources to install formal parking in all areas around the island where there is unregulated parking.

But representations from residents and users of this area span a long period, with the issues ongoing and showing no sign of significant improvement. For this reason, it has been decided to prioritise regulated parking for this area.

The introduction of 23-hour approved parking does not require parking discs to be displayed. It does though require a vehicle to be moved at least once every 23 hours. The parking of motorcycles is permitted.

E&I president Barry Brehaut said: ‘When incidents like this occur, it is not only a nuisance but also restricts the availability of parking for other road users.

‘The absence of regulated parking means that Guernsey Police has limited powers to deal with these issues. Guernsey Police has been consulted and are supportive of the proposal and what we are trying to achieve.’

n Before making a final decision, E&I is inviting people to provide feedback on the proposal.

Any person wishing to comment should write to Traffic and Highway Services, PO Box 145, Bulwer Avenue, GY2 4LR, or email: traffic@gov.gg to arrive no later than Monday 16 March.
