Active 8 has been proposed by Education, Sport & Culture, with a total estimated cost of £1.15m. needed to fulfil objectives across the decade.

Primarily, Active 8 states that, regardless of age, background or ability, everyone can be active or participate in sport.

A policy letter was published on Monday requesting approval for funding to start the plan.

Permission is needed from Policy & Resources to transfer £130,000 from the budget reserve to ESC’s 2020 budget.

After consultation, it was noted sporting facilities needed investment for several reasons, one of which is to become more cost-effective for the community.

If approved, P&R may provide loans for sporting organisations up to £1m. following written requests from ESC to improve facilities and increase stakeholder participation.

The plan recognises the States’ duty to consider health in all policies and so, while ambitious, it could be a durable contribution to the community.

From a medical perspective, the long-term benefits of embedding physical activity into daily lives is supported to prevent illness from inactivity.

A phased approach across 10 years allows greater participation and continuous review to ensure the plan is responsive to changing local needs.
