The Guille-Alles library has been taking steps to keep everyone healthy and safe while continuing to serve the public in the wake of the news that the coronavirus has hit Guernsey.

In an announcement, they said staff can be seen cleaning surfaces, computers and self-service kiosks more often than usual, as well as books and other items as they are returned.

Shakers, cushions and toys have been temporarily removed from the Children’s Library and hand sanitiser has been stationed around the building for everyone to use.

‘We would also ask that you do not come to the library if you are feeling unwell,’ they said.

‘We are keeping a close eye on the situation and will continue to take our lead from Public Health Services.

‘We do have a plan in place for the return of loans and the continuation of some services if we are required to temporarily reduce opening hours or close.’

The outbreak presents many challenges, one of which is how to explain to children what is going on.

National Public Radio in the United States has produced a simple and informative comic that parents might find helpful, www.shorturl.at/uFN35

Some copies have been printed and turned into a ‘zine’, which is available to collect from the Children’s Library.

‘It’s important we all stay informed, but unfortunately rumours and false information can spread faster than the virus itself, especially online.

‘To get the facts, a good place to start is the World Health Organisation’s dedicated page about the virus, with a Q&A section [www.who.int/news-room/q-a-detail/q-a-coronaviruses] and a myth busters page [www.who.int/…/novel-coronavi…/advice-for-public/myth-busters] as well as www.gov.gg/coronavirus for all the latest local information.

‘If you’re spending more time at home than normal, don’t forget about our collection of eBooks, audiobooks, digital magazines and other e-resources, all available for free through our website www.library.gg.

‘If you need help setting up accounts, don’t hesitate to get in touch. Thank you for your patience as we work through this developing situation.’
