Three arrests on first night of pub restrictions
BAILIWICK police made three arrests on the first night of new pub licensing restrictions, and only one of the arrests was said to be ‘loosely connected’ to the new rules.
As of 6.30pm on Friday nightclubs, pubs and bars that do not serve food were required to close.
One of the Friday night arrests was outside the Britannia Pub in Trinity Square and it was filmed by an onlooker and posted on Facebook.
The social media machine went into overdrive and the video was widely shared and hundreds of users jumped to conclusions and posted comments.
It prompted the police to issue a statement in order to clarify the situation.
They confirmed that the person in question was arrested for disorderly conduct, and it was not the licensee.
It is also understood that the licensee had closed the premises at the correct time and the incident occurred outside the pub.
At this difficult time the police have asked the public to be wary about spreading misinformation.
‘Social media speculation and rumour is unhelpful at the best of times, and I think we can all agree this is not the best of times.
‘We want to thank everyone for their co-operation and further ask that you pay attention to the social distancing and social isolation guidance put out by the States, the source you can trust.
‘By following these rules you are doing the right thing for you and our community.
‘We are in this together.
‘Not in it for ourselves.’
The licensee could not be contacted over the weekend to provide further clarification.
