GUERNSEY’S coronavirus testing regime will eventually see results turned around in half a day.

The island will have two different ways of testing, once all the equipment arrives.

The intention is to test everyone in the hospital with respiratory symptoms, healthcare workers and anyone attending the Longfrie Surgery, which has been dedicated to those with relevant symptoms needing to see a doctor.

Director of Public Health Dr Nicola Brink said the results of these will allow decisions to be made about whether to lift restrictions temporarily and then react again if there is further evidence of community spread.

She said that a number of commercial tests were coming online, but they were difficult to evaluate.

But one which Public Health was looking at would use equipment the hospital had.

‘That would be extremely useful for inpatients. Results would be available within half a day.’

An order has been put in.

Antibody testing is also being developed internationally that would show whether people have had coronavirus, not whether they currently do.

Dr Brink said that there was not a lot of information on this, but that it was largely being used to release healthcare workers back into work.
