Couple lift spirits with message
A ST SAVIOUR’S couple are looking to lift people’s spirits in these difficult times.
Sarah and Andrew Bough have put a ‘Guernsey Together’ sign in front of their house at La Grande Rue.
Mrs Bough, a riding instructor, said it was vital that Guernsey pulled together in such times and that we were lucky to live in a place where community spirit already thrived.
Islanders have been hit hard by the news of what is happening and the lockdown that has been put in place.
‘I was feeling quite low and I’m sure that a lot of people
were feeling the same too,’ she said.
‘Then I thought, let’s turn it around and do something to cheer people up.’
Initially, Mrs Bough tried to lift spirits on Facebook, which attracted a lot of comment and likes.
She and her husband, who drives buses for the special needs schools, then built the sign from what they could find, which happened to be foam squares with blackboard paint on.
‘It’s wonderful to hear the comments that people make as they walk past,’ she said. ‘I know that some people have put up lights, other have done flags.’
‘The sign can be interpreted whichever way you want, whether that’s lifting community spirit generally or saying a big thank you and well done to all the nurses and health care staff.
‘It’s about giving people something to smile about and that extra nudge to do something.
‘I think Guernsey has gone into higher gear and we are lucky to live in a place where people are known for pulling together in difficult times.’
People are being encouraged to put rainbows in windows to say thank you to key workers.
Mrs Bough said that she was keen to support the rainbow initiative as well and had added one to her sign.
