Pub is closed, but landlord still doing bit for community
HE’S not allowed to open for business, but that has not stopped pub landlord Richard Skipper from continuing his support for the community.
He has been getting knee deep in donated groceries at the Plough Inn in Vauvert which will be given to older people living nearby with no family.
People have been leaving goods outside the pub after Mr Skipper appealed for help for people who could struggle to find out about and know how to receive their weekly shop.
It started as a single carrier bag outside the pub.
‘The response has been amazing from islanders as you can see,’ he said.
‘Following on from our community shop delivery to vulnerable folk in our area, Vauvert, George Street and streets off those, we heard of more folk on their own and literally knocked on doors posting a note asking how we can best serve them and groceries appeared to be the overwhelming response.
‘So we put out an appeal from the Plough Inn Plough Out charity based at the Plough Inn.’
In the spirit of the pub’s slogan ‘a community in the pub and a pub in the community’ locals have generously donated items such as pasta, flour, jam, soup and even some daffodils, along with Easter cards made by children from the Bright Beginnings Nursery, which will go with groceries to more than 30 households in the Vauvert area.
Mr Skipper added they had enough for 10 days and would now be sorting out the foods to be able to take them to individuals’ homes.
‘We will be bagging up non-perishables and posting a note and leaving the bag in a safe place,’ he said.
‘We’ll also now liaise with Guernsey welfare office during the week as we have had such a great response.’
