In a response to a question put forward by chief minister Deputy St Pier during today's media briefing about the opening of takeaways in other jurisdictions but not here, Deputy Soulsby said the restrictions in Guernsey was based around the risk and the nature of the takeaway premises.

‘It’s not about being able to deliver food it’s purely around the kitchens,’ she said.

‘Again, it’s what we have assessed as being too risky at this particular phase, but we hope if we get through this phase quickly and in line with our exit strategy that it won’t be long before certainly the next phase would be looking at starting takeaways again.

‘I hope so because I’m just looking forward to having a Chinese again.’

Public Health director Dr Nicola Brink confirmed they would take a look at opening them soon.

‘We’ve listened to what people have said.

‘What we’re asking you to do is to bear with us while we get through the next stage, but we are absolutely planning to put it into the next phase,’ she said

‘We agree that this is something that a lot of the population are asking for but it always has to go back to what is the risk associated, so we’re going back to our peer assessment risk.

‘From our perspective we feel putting this into the next phase is entirely reasonable, so you don’t have to wait too long for your takeaway.’

More details on the next phases will be released next week.

In the UK, Burger King, KFC, Pret A Manger and TGI Friday’s have all begun limited reopening for takeaways and delivery.

On Thursday, people queued around the block in Havant, Hampshire, when the first Burger King opened.
