This year’s West Show is cancelled
ALL of Guernsey’s summer shows have now been cancelled, with the West Show following suit in the wake of cancellations from the South Show and the North Show with its Battle of Flowers.
The West United Agricultural and Horticultural Society committee said it was with regret they have had to announce that the 2020 West Show which was due to be held between 19-20 August will not take place.
‘We are all extremely disappointed that we are unable to hold the show this year,’ a committee spokesperson said.
‘Having delayed this difficult decision as long as we could in the hope that it would be possible to go ahead, we have now decided with the uncertainty of whether the restrictions on large gatherings and social distancing will be relaxed sufficiently.
‘The safety of the public is our main priority [and we feel] this is the appropriate course of action to support what has been achieved by the Civil Contingencies Authority in reducing the active cases within the Bailiwick to zero.’
Committee president Richard Ashplant explained there were other factors that were considered when reaching the decision: ‘I take no pleasure in recommending the cancellation of the West Show,’ he said.
‘However, we are unlikely to be able to bring tents into the island or secure any entertainment from the UK. The show would therefore fail to live up to the standard that the public and members of the society have come to expect.’
n The 2021 West Show is due to be held between 18-19 August.
