Animal Aid contacted owner Joelle Podger after Jesper was found while a search was taking place for another lost cat, Lola.

They were reunited on Friday.

Ms Podger said, ‘I am over the moon to have our boy back. We searched for months, but no sightings whatsoever. My daughter was so excited – we never thought we would see him again. I literally couldn’t believe it.’

An exceptional hunter, there was hope for Jesper.

‘We asked all around and my daughter made missing posters. Whenever I saw a cat with similar markings, wherever on the island, I would call out his name.’

Feelings of worry have been put to bed.

‘I kept thinking what if. I remember hearing about cat remains found at Port Soif and wondered if it was Jesper. It’s a horrible feeling not knowing. I was constantly concerned whether he was hurt, trapped or starving.

‘I wondered if someone had taken him in, but the “new owner” would need to take him to the vets for yearly jabs, and then it would transpire that he had a different owner.’

Jesper has settled back in.

‘It’s like he has never been missing. I kept the dogs in a separate room and made him a den. He had his dinner and sat with my daughter and myself for hours on the sofa purring.’

With a new puppy, Hettie, introductions were a worry.

‘But I was determined to give it a go. We had Mollie our dog when Jesper was with us previously.

‘Jesper felt very comfortable in the house. After 24 hours I introduced Mollie to Jesper. They sniffed noses then cuddled up together on the sofa – it was an incredible moment. My heart melted, I am so sure they remember each other.’

Hettie has now met Jesper and all is well.

‘A massive thank you to the lady who contacted Animal Aid. If she had not called, Jesper would still be missing.

‘A huge thank you to Animal Aid too for all the wonderful work they do. He had the best care and attention with them.

‘If a cat keeps appearing at your doorstep for food, please don’t feed them – contact Animal Aid or the GSPCA.

‘I really hope Lola and her family are soon reunited too.’
