Countries which are already vulnerable to famine may experience acute hunger as a consequence of Covid-19.

All funds will be split evenly between local charities Goal 50 and School Farms Africa, and international charities Unicef and Preemptive Love.

Alexandra Stephens said, ‘My friends Ellie Gallienne, Suzanne Mather, David Reed, Lauri Warlow, Tim Ogier and I are holding a private sprint-triathlon. Unfortunately, the event has to stay private as more participants would involve road closures and medical staff etc.’

They will swim 750m, cycle 20km and run 5km, starting at Pembroke at 9am on Saturday 25 July.

‘We have been very focused on our own difficulties arising from coronavirus. Although there has been suffering, loss and financial difficulties, we can all agree we have been blessed to be in Guernsey during this time in history.’

A United Nations report stated an exponential crisis could result from Covid-19 in already malnourished populations, doubling the number of famished people to 265m. by the end of 2020.

‘Now we are looking to the global community who are in need of food, medical support, governmental guidance and much more. This event is a way of raising awareness and helping people outside of our Bailiwick bubble in desperate need.’

School Farms Africa is partnered with a farm in Nairobi, Kenya, and works to provide food and education in Kibera slums.

Goal 50 supports Cape Town street children through football academies and feeding programmes, to nurture positive members of society.

In over 190 jurisdictions Unicef works to realise children’s full potential through saving lives and defending children’s rights.

Preemptive Love provides medical care, food and shelter in Kenya, Cape Town and Syria.
