A serious assault in Sark at the weekend saw the St Peter Port Lifeboat called out in the early hours of Saturday to evacuate the victim, who had suffered a major knee injury that needed to be operated on.
St John Ambulance Guernsey confirmed the Flying Christine was currently out of action, but said it was due to return soon.
‘The marine ambulance is currently undergoing its annual service and routine maintenance,’ the spokesman said.
‘Due to the Covid-19 lockdown and with no cruise ships currently visiting the Bailiwick, St John has taken the opportunity to undertake some additional work to the vessel and the tender boat.
‘As part of our ongoing contingency plans, the St Peter Port Lifeboat has been made available to the Emergency Ambulance Service to respond to medical cases in the other islands. Work on the Flying Christine III is expected to be completed imminently.’
St John thanked the RNLI for its assistance during this period.
Guernsey operates with two lifeboats – the inshore Elizabeth and Margaret Milligan B-class Atlantic lifeboat, which was introduced in July last year, and all-weather vessel the Spirit of Guernsey. The Flying Christine III is the marine equivalent of an accident and emergency ambulance.
