Music students busk around Town
TIMES LIKE THESE hit the right note yesterday as a 55-strong group performance brought a day of busking in St Peter Port to a close.
Mirroring the strange times of this year, the School of Popular Music’s summer school joined together to cover the Foo Fighters hit. Even the church bell chimed in to ring on-beat, which gave the audience a chuckle.
SOPM managing director Tyler Edmonds said: ‘It’s been awesome, we’ve probably had our best year yet. Thankfully it hasn’t been too hot. With the nice weather, everyone in Town has been really generous.’
Some students had never performed in public before.
‘Most of our 10 bands have raised around £100 each, which will be split between them.’
Band members picked their own songs to play at all the main busking hot spots.
Guitar & bass teacher Elliot Falla said that each band has learned three songs since Monday.
‘This is where it all came together. Because of the added pressure of performance it’s built confidence, as well as making some money which will be split at the end of the day. It’s a nice taster for tomorrow at Fermain, then the Mermaid on Saturday.’
Recording sessions took place at SOPM’s campus later in the afternoon.
Student Summer Turberville, 11, said: ‘It’s been really cool, everybody has been learning new songs all week. I’ve performed in public before but this is a whole different experience – and you don’t get to perform every day.’
Student Alex Sarchet, 17, said: ‘I’ve done all of SOPM’s summer schools before. I’m hoping to still be able to do next year’s, then go off to university before coming back to teach. Summer school has got me out of bed and out of the house earlier than the past four months.’
Students will be performing at the Fermain Tavern at 6pm today. Tomorrow they will be travelling over to Herm for a gig at the Mermaid before camping for the night.
