Previously the hottest day had been in June, when the temperature reached 29.2 degrees. But just after 3pm yesterday it rose to 30 degrees, and then reached 30.9C by 4pm.

A Guernsey Met Office spokesperson said they expected it possibly to rise even further as the earlier cloud cover cleared.

The weather has come up from the south, and nearby France has suffered in higher temperatures, with Rennes reaching 38C yesterday.

Temperatures are set to fall back a bit.

‘It will be a sunny weekend, at about the mid-20s,’ the spokesperson said.

‘It will still be sunny on Monday and Tuesday.

‘But there is a chance after Tuesday of showers.’
