Applause as ‘true public servant’ retires
‘A TRUE public servant’ retired from his role in the States chamber yesterday afternoon to a huge round of applause from members of the Assembly yesterday at the end of the last States meeting of this political term.
Deputy Bailiff Jessica Roland paid tribute to the long-serving Peter Martel.
Born in Guernsey days before the Occupation, he has been a fixture around the Royal Court building for many years, first as a milkman and then taking official office.
He has been in his present role since 2007, helping with security and keeping order in States meetings.
‘Outside of the various works he has done outside of the parish offices of St Peter’s, he has worked as junior and then senior constable, was a douzenier and has been on the parish church management committee – a true public servant,’ Ms Roland said.
‘It seems odd that the States will be called without you, Peter, but in the meantime on behalf of everybody here I wish you a very long and happy retirement.’
He was presented with a gift by the States Greffier to show their appreciation.
Ms Roland then thanked States members for their dedication over the last four years, saying they had been kind and patient as she got to grips with the role over the last few months – and for being respectful of the role of Presiding Officer.
Then, Mother of the House Deputy Mary Lowe rose and thanked the previous Bailiff, Sir Richard Collas, current Bailiff Richard McMahon and Ms Roland for their work, saying it had been a privilege to work with them.
‘We also have a huge team behind the States of Guernsey and at St James’ Chambers who are on hand to help at all hours, so thank you all for being an integral part of the working of the States.’
