Voting for the 154 nominees opened just over a week ago and by yesterday morning there were 18,109 votes cast online and 165 votes cast by paper.

There has been a particularly large number of votes cast in the angel, carer, teacher and emergency hero categories.

Guernsey Press editor Shaun Green said he was delighted to see so many people vote in this year’s Pride of Guernsey awards.

‘This year has been tough for all islanders and to see so many people recognise the efforts of those around them is really heart-warming,’ he said.

‘It’s fantastic for people to have the opportunity to celebrate those across the island who make our community a better place to live, especially during a year such as this one with lockdown and the Covid-19 pandemic.

‘Islanders have really connected to the stories behind each nominee and it can’t be easy to pick who to vote for, it’ll be interesting to see who makes the shortlist in the awards’ fifth year.’

There are 13 categories, including young achiever, arts contribution, overcoming adversity and teacher of the year alongside sponsors, including St Pierre Park Hotel, Spa & Golf Resort, Moonpig, Close Finance and HSBC. Islanders can vote for as many nominees as they like, but only one vote can be cast per nominee. Voting closes on Friday 4 September. The three most popular nominees in each category will make up the shortlist.

A judging panel will then select the overall winners, which will be announced at a ceremony in October.
