Ian Brown’s Cycle Shop’s month-long challenge began on Saturday with a free breakfast at The Kiln, Oatlands.

In its 13th year and with 116 participants, including 55 first-timers, riders will be taking to their bikes – all wearing distinctive yellow jerseys this year – for one hour each day over 30 consecutive days raising money for Les Bourgs Hospice.

The final 30th day of the challenge will be on Sunday 27 September when the riders will meet again at the end of their challenge.

‘The Les Bourgs Hospice fundraising activities have long been associated with cyclists and the Rocque to Rock bike ride,’ said challenge organiser Ian Brown.

‘We know many individuals who cycle regularly who look for a new challenge and this is why we came up with this idea.

‘These days, even more so, people appreciate seeing their island by cycle and many who do the challenge carry on cycling after the event.’

The original dates for the event this year was to start on 25 April, but was one of the many victims of Covid-19.

It meant the organisers were delighted when they were able to reschedule the event for an August start.

They were thankful of the support of the island to enable the riders to do what they do best and raise funds for the hospice.

However, this year is said to be very different year for fundraising.

Friends of Les Bourgs, Mira Domaille, said at the breakfast launch: ‘We do need to be realistic this year but the 30 Rides in 30 Days is a significant contributor to the annual fundraising and any funds raised this year will be even more appreciated by the hospice.’

Last year, riders raised £75,000. Since 2008, the total accumulated funds raised by the event stands at £750,000.
