Hidden ‘treasure’ wanted
FORGOTTEN treasures are being sought ahead of this year’s St Matthew’s Church annual bazaar on 17 October.
Organiser Diana Legge said the theme changes every three years for the bazaar, which raises much-needed funds for the maintenance of the church.
This year the theme is ‘The Pirates of Cobo’ and as well as the usual cake stalls and games, there will be a treasure trove run by Peter Martel.
Mr Martel is looking to find some great pieces to enhance his ‘treasure trove’ stall this year.
‘I think lots of people, like me, would have had a good clear-out during lockdown and sorted through things in their homes or sheds,’ he said.
‘If anyone has stumbled across some hidden treasure that they have forgotten about but that has value, it would be great to include it in the treasure trove.’
He is ideally looking for pieces that could be worth at least £5 and anyone who has something they would like to give can contact him on 255927 or 07781 102086.
Alternatively, it could be taken to the Cobo Community Centre after 2pm on Fridays.
‘We’re hoping to get our hands on some really great pieces, old bits of Guernsey or any hidden gems,’ he added.
The bazaar will be opened by the church vicar, Rev. Scott Lamb, at 11am and at 2pm the Golden Ballot draw will be conducted by assistant curate the Rev. Bev Herve.
A very attractive £1,500 cash prize is on offer as the first prize, with a second prize of £500.
Tickets will be on sale at St Martin’s Co-op on 7 October, Le Friquet on 9 October and at St Sampson’s Co-op on 13 October.
Mrs Legge said the event is very popular, with people of all ages attending.
It takes place in the Cobo Community Centre. and there will be a children’s play area upstairs next to the cafe, as well as the main event downstairs.
‘There will be plenty of things for the children to do, including walking the plank, naming the pirate, making a pirate mask, and the chance to win a chocolate gold coin by rolling ‘eye balls’ at skittles.
‘As well, there will be more stalls selling craft goods, jewellers and other attractions.’
Local group GU10 will also be singing a selection of sea shanties.
n Rue de la Lande will be one-way from 8.30am, so vehicles must approach from the west coast. Parking is free, please note the bazaar is cash or cheques only.
