Castel couple shocked to find car drenched in paint
A COUPLE in the Castel woke to find their car drenched in paint in an unprovoked ‘shocking and unheard of’ incident.
The damage, estimated by the insurance company of the owners, who wish to remain anonymous, is said to be in excess of £5,000 as the paint – white tile paint – covers paintwork and bumpers alike and cannot be removed without further damage.
The incident happened in the area of Retot between 9pm last Thursday and 8am the next day.
One of the owners said police had attended and took details but as yet there were no leads.
‘Having lived here all his life, my husband is shocked at this level of vandalism,’ she said.
‘It’s unheard of in Guernsey.’
She said after using the car the previous evening to collect tiles from B&Q they had not heard anything suspicious overnight.
‘My husband uses his car to get to and from work,’ she said.
‘We went out to the car Friday morning to get in it to go to work and then noticed the paint – it was tile paint, the worst type, and it has damaged the paintwork and 80% of the plastic, such as the bumpers.’
A quote from their insurance company has revealed the damage – which because of the type of paint used cannot be cleaned off without damage to the paintwork – is estimated to be in excess of £5,000, for a complete respray and replacement of bumpers and wheel arches, plus more.
The paint was also found on their front wall and on the road leading away from their house.
Following the drips of paint, the couple found that the tin had been carried away from their house and then dumped by the side of the road.
The couple, who said they could not think of anything that had happened to provoke the damage, now want to find out more.
‘We’re OK, yet angry.
‘We cannot understand why this happened,’ one of them added.
‘What would we say to the person who did this – why and or what reason?
‘We would like to ask anyone who has seen white paint on someone’s shoes or clothing that they couldn’t explain to contact the police.’
Anyone with any information is requested to contact PC 34 Batten at Guernsey Police on 725111.
