The issue came to light after a man fell more than five metres from the top of a pontoon gangway in Victoria Marina, landing on granite below, in 2018.

A guilty plea had previously been entered to the charge of failing to provide safe access to the marina pontoons, including edge protection.

In the case it was found that a pair of low, slack chains at the top of the pontoon gangway had been insufficient to stop the man falling and would also have failed to keep other members of the public safe.

Judge Russell Finch said the man had suffered an unfortunate accident, which should have been foreseen.

The chain set up has now been changed.

Further details will be published in tomorrow's Guernsey Press.
