Attendees can talk freely or just listen in a confidential and trusting environment.

Sessions take place on the third Monday of each month, with the first being on October next week.

‘Thankfully there is a growing acceptance of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer or questioning (LGBTQ+) community in the Bailiwick in recent years,’ a Liberate spokesperson said.

Bailiwick residents are more comfortable and confident identifying as LGBTQ+, yet those in the community are four times more likely to attempt suicide, and more at risk of suicidal behaviour and self-harm than non-LGBTQ+ counterparts.

Community members are at greater risk of experiencing discrimination and hate crimes, so altogether the need for dedicated mental health support is strong.

Group facilitators trained in mental health first aid will steer the support sessions.

One anonymous facilitator said she was so pleased to see the group set up, and wants to help others feel confident and happy in themselves.

‘I have struggled with my own mental health for a number of years and I know how beneficial it is to have support groups like this.’

Talking to somebody who understands is valuable support, she said.

‘I am a lesbian and I came out when I was 23. I won’t lie, it was very much an emotional rollercoaster for me.

‘Over the years I have had numerous obstacles to overcome, including issues with my family. I have, however, learnt a lot about myself and I am finally confident and happy with who I am.’
