Doris Lane, who lives at Rosaire Court, celebrated her centenary birthday yesterday with a card from the Queen, a party with family and friends, and a fitness class.

She explained that clean living and staying active has been the key to her longevity.

‘I’ve always been energetic so plenty of walking and keeping on the go all the time, and working hard,’ she said.

‘I walk somewhere every day to keep my legs going, even if it’s just around the garden here.

‘The fitness classes here are very good, I used to go to physio and this is a bonus really.

‘I eat anything, except my tummy rebels sometimes, otherwise I’m fine.

‘I used to enjoy the occasional drink but I don’t drink now, and I’ve never been a smoker.

It might have been her 100th birthday, but that wasn’t going to stop Doris Lane joining in the weekly fitness class at Rosaire Court with Ross Philippe of Fit Blast. (28794533)

‘I’ve always been for crosswords and puzzles and things like that. It keeps my mind on the go.’

The exercise group meets every Tuesday and is organised by the Rosaire Community Association, which is funded by a Channel Islands Christmas Lottery grant.

Keen participant Doris was from London and up until the Second World War she worked as a librarian.

After the outbreak of war she started working for the Ministry of Aircraft, and two years into the war she married her husband, who was in the RAF.

After the war Doris said it was a holiday to Guernsey that changed the course of her life.

‘Because of the Blitz in London everything was a mess, so we decided to have a holiday and we came over here and I loved it straight away.

‘So we went back and packed everything up and came over here to live.

‘I still love it, it’s changed a lot, it was lovely when I first came, but yes, I still like it, and the people.’
