A handmade wreath is hung on one of the walls of the school, with hand-painted wooden poppies decorated by the students.

Art, design and photography lead at the school Emma Thompson said each wooden poppy was finalised with a word that embodies the students’ response to remembering those who gave their lives in conflicts both past and present.

‘The whole process has been very emotive and thought-provoking for our students,’ she said.

Words like courage, sacrifice, honour, brave and legend appear on the poppies.

The students worked on their poppy over the course of two weeks.

Allocated pupils cut out the silhouettes of servicemen to be displayed alongside the wooden wreath.

‘Some students were able to recall links to their personal experiences of knowing ancestors or relatives, which in turn created a respectful working environment,’ Ms Thompson said.

‘The students were keen to see how their poppy would be displayed as a collaboration across year groups and there was a real air of pride and achievement once it was completed.’
