Many Town shops will be staying open on Thursday evenings in the run-up to Christmas and islanders embraced the chance to shop.

Among them was Sheralee Torode, who was out shopping with her family.

‘It is useful,’ she said.

‘Weekends get busy so it is good to have the evening.

‘We have been buying Christmas gifts and Guernsey gifts to send to the UK. I would like to see more shops open.’

About a third of the Town shops were closed, including Burtons, Card Factory, Millets, Fat Face and Monsoon.

But some businesses did have notices up stating they would be opening for late-night shopping events closer to Christmas.

Also out shopping were friends Lisa King and Jenny Carre, who were treating themselves to a few things such as boots and slippers.

They said it was a pleasure to enjoy the lights.

‘The tree [in Market Square] is beautiful this year,’ Ms Carre said.

‘It’s nice being able to shop without pressure.’

Filippa Wagstaff, 19, was out with her dog Hagrid and her family to enjoy the late-night shopping event.

‘I like that it makes Christmas start early,’ she said.

‘I just like looking at the lights and enjoying the spirit of it.

‘I might do a bit of shopping.’

Shops will be staying open until 9pm every Thursday in the run-up to Christmas. There are also stalls in the High Street and live entertainment.
