Christmas under the stars
TWINKLY lights greeted islanders at the St Saviour’s Community Centre’s first Christmas fair.

The event started in the afternoon, but organisers intentionally ran the event into the evening, so islanders could enjoy the outdoor light decorations, which had been festooned around the site.
Douzenier and centre trustee Corinne Connolly said it had all gone really well.
‘This is the first Christmas market we have done,’ she said.
‘There are about a dozen stall holders, which are mostly local crafty businesses.’
As well as giving local crafters a venue to sell their wares, Mrs Connolly said they also saw the event as a good chance to showcase how the centre can be used for big events, like parties or weddings. Stalls were both inside the hall and also on the outside grassland.
Despite running for five hours – to cover the afternoon and early evening – Mrs Connolly said it had not been quiet.
‘It’s been quite steady,’ she said.
Andy’s House was turned into Santa’s Grotto for the afternoon. Helper Paula Nash said they had run a special quiet hour at the start for autistic children, which had been very much appreciated.
During the day more than 30 children took the chance to tell Santa what they wanted for Christmas.
‘They have all been very excited,’ Miss Nash said.
Apparently chocolate was the most popular request, although there were also a few requests for games consoles.
Mrs Connolly said the event was an important fundraiser, and would help fund to maintain the historic building.
An Easter fair might be held next year.
