Ellie has been named after the girl who spotted it.

On Monday, British Divers Marine Life Rescue Jersey picked up the grey pup from the beach at Plemont and thanked Ellie and her family for calling the JSPCA out-of-hours diver.

The pup was seen flailing around at sea near surfers in a huge swell and came onto the beach exhausted.

Temporary white coats on seal pups are not waterproof and pups this young should remain on land until moulting this coat.

It is likely the pup was washed away from its mother and, if it had continued to float around at sea, it would have eventually drowned.

Ellie is very underweight, at 16kg, but was in the capable hands of a vet and his team for a health assessment and vital fluids for two days.

Ellie then hitched a lift on Iris Freight CI’s Channel Chieftain V, which brings the national newspapers to Guernsey, and has joined Joey the seal pup at the GSPCA. While Joey is doing very well in the pool, Ellie still has a long way to go, being so young and thin, head of marine animals Geoff George said.

‘With two seals needing around-the-clock care over Christmas and the New Year, all donations towards their care are very much appreciated.’

GSPCA manager Steve Byrne said: ‘With two seals now at the GSPCA, more than 100 hedgehogs and hundreds of other animals, we are in for a busy festive period.

‘Poor Ellie is very young and very thin and Geoff and the team will be ensuring she has around-the-clock care.’
