Katie Lewis is letting others be privy to her opinions of the toilet facilities offered across the island. Included in her assessment criteria are cleanliness, the availability of sanitary products, loo roll provision, space and decor, which account for overall quality and experience.

‘It’s all a bit of fun, but my friends and I do believe this can make a big difference to your overall evening,’ said Miss Lewis.

Healthy competition in a light-hearted way may encourage establishments to up their game.

‘No one wants to find a dirty bathroom and it’s a game-changer when places provide sanitary products if you don’t bring enough by mistake or realise you need some unexpectedly. For many women, this can be the difference between staying out and having fun with friends and a few more drinks, or heading home feeling stressed.’

Providing a good bathroom experience which caters for ladies encourages customers to return. Deemed a ‘lavatory leader board’, each establishment will be rated on the above criteria using a rating scale out of 10. Scores are totalled and posted on the Instagram account ‘KatieOnTheLoo’, with a picture of the bathroom and a brief evaluation.

‘I give places an automatic two if they have a bin in the cubicle as they should include one as an absolute minimum in my opinion – I’m shocked that some places don’t have one. I think the other criteria vary, but I try and keep consistent across the board.’

Catering for customers’ needs is of top priority.

‘Atmosphere is definitely important, but I wouldn’t mind an outdated toilet with sanitary products as opposed to a fancy new one without. I think the sanitary products are the most important part to me and the other criteria is just an extra thing to rate that might make some businesses think about updating decor or cleaning more if required.’

Set up on Saturday 2 January, at the time of writing the account had more than 100 followers.

Although it started for a bit of fun, should the account pick up other criteria may be included such as disabled access, with suggestions welcome for further improvements.
